History
South
Carolina Gospel Quartet Awards was the brainchild of Ms. Blanche V.
Goodson. After attending the American Gospel Quartet Convention in
Birmingham, Alabama in 1998, it became apparent to Ms. Goodson that
South Carolina was on the verge of losing a significant portion of the
culture history of Gospel Music. South Carolina’s contribution to
gospel music is often overlooked and many have no idea of the rich
history of this genre of music. It that context, many have no idea of
the artists from South Carolina that have played, many times a
significant role, in the enhancement of this art form. Many still
grapple with the idea that there was a major gospel label in South
Carolina for many years, Hoyt Sullivan Enterprises. That one label made
an indelible impact on getting little known, yet powerful, gospel
singers into the mainstream of the music industry.
The
history music be told and the music must be preserved. One of telling
the history is to honor those in South Carolina that has contributed to
the music. Thus, the formation of South Carolina Gospel Quartet Awards
(SCGQA).
SCGQA
was officially launched in 1999 with an awards banquet and concert. The
weekend events were attended by gospel music personalities from all
over the country, in addition to numerous participants from within the
state of South Carolina. There were gospel music singers, Radio Angels,
record label officials, gospel music musicians, promoters,
representatives from various gospel music organizations, and fans in
attendance. The early events were held at the National Guard Armory on
Bluff Road.
SCGQA has served to
introduce many of the local gospel artists to the world. SCGQA
actually provided stipends for local groups to attend the national
gathering of gospel music enthusiasts in Birmingham, Alabama. SCGQA has
served as a conduit for gospel artists to connect with industry
personnel, producers and other artists. SCGQA has also sponsored
workshops and seminars for South Carolinians to become better informed
about all aspects of the gospel music industry.
Groups like the Women of Strength,
Bless-Ed, Minister
Ricky McDuffie And The Family,
Roy And Revelations, Flossie
Boyd Johnson And Favor, and The Gospel Legends
have used their affiliation with SCGQA to launch their careers. SCGQA
is one of the most respected organizations in the gospel music
community. Numerous artists and presenters from beyond the
borders of South Carolina seek to be a part of the annual event.
